Norwin Graduated Senior Baseball Catcher Donates to WIU Foundation

Baseball catchers are poised to receive, but Ty Cupp, a graduated senior who was the starting catcher for Norwin High School, also positioned himself to give back this year.

Through his fundraiser, “Swinging To Support,” Ty’s game stats were tracked during his senior year with money collected for the number of singles, doubles, triples, home runs, walks, and the number of times he caught a runner stealing a base and producing an out for his team as well as through general donations. His efforts raised $1,300 to benefit the families of the WIU’s Early Intervention program in need of additional assistance and support for their children with special needs.

Dr. Denise Lohr, Early Childhood Services Administrator, commented, “The WIU serves 1,600 students in Westmoreland County. We are grateful for Ty’s generous gift to the WIU Foundation to help us support our families whenever an emergency need arises.”

The WIU Foundation was chosen as the beneficiary, Cupp said, in commemoration of his mother, Tonia, who serves as a contracted Occupational Therapist for the WIU Early Intervention program. “The program has had a big impact on her and so this is how I wanted to give back.”

Earning an academic and baseball scholarship, Cupp will be attending Mercyhurst University this fall to major in Sports Medicine.
